Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
